Photos of a sweet little boy
The first is of Patric two weeks ago and the second is of Patric when he was a toddler.
The staff at his orphanage made this comment, "We thought he would have died years ago, but he is still alive, he is a miracle." They think he may have sickle cell disease in addition to his heart disease, but the testing is not sophisticated enough to confirm that here. He has a surviving grandfather that is unable to care for him at all. He has an older brother that was adopted a long time ago to Europe. That adopting family will not adopt Patric, though they want to keep in touch with him.

road blocks and frustrations
So, I was able to get a hold of the CD containing Patric's medical exams. They were brought to a doctor in the U.S. a few days ago. Unfortunately, the heart echo was not on it, only the head CT. A good friend called the center in Kigali again today. They don't record echo's supposedly. Not sure what to do next. We need the information from the heart echo to know how severe his condition really is right now. I have some recent photos of sweet Patric I will post later.

a very special little boy
I met Patric about a year ago. I knew right away that he was a special little boy. He was very little, and quiet. He came up to me, slipped his hand in mine, called me mama in a quiet voice, and stuck close the whole time I visited his home. He's lived in an orphanage in central Africa his whole 7 years. He is an orphan. A lot of that time he has been in and out of hospitals. He has never been to school. He is often weak and tired. He lives in a big orphanage, with lots of other kids, he often watches the kids play.
Patric has dilated cardiomyopathy. His heart is too big and too weak. He has severe anemia and his long standing heart problem has affected not only his growth and development, but also other organs in his body.
He needs medical care that can only be found in the United States or in Europe, if he is to live. More than anything else, though, Patric needs to belong and to know he is loved. Patric needs a family. He needs a family to love him for the rest of his days, whether it be for six months, 6 years, or 60 years. Patric needs a family. He needs a family that is willing to love him regardless of whether he is healthy or not. Regardless of that fact he will need a lot of medicine, rest, hospital visits, and maybe surgery.
Maybe Patric will need a new heart, it his hard to know. Only a new physical heart though. There is nothing wrong with the heart and soul of this little boy. He has taught me about faith, love, perseverance, determination, courage.
A miracle is happening. Whether it is in his physical body in the days ahead or in the hearts of those who will meet and help him, God is at work. And He just might surprise us all in what He will do with the life of this little boy.
He needs a family that knows he is their son. A family that has heard a very special call to this very special little boy.
We have an echo of his heart, a CT of his head, lab reports, and medical reports. I am in touch with a doctor in the U.S. about his case. He either needs to get to the states on an emergency medical visa or be adopted here and then to the U.S. with his new family.
